This week's Smart Deal comes from Virgin Vacations (tel. 888/937-8474; www.virgin-vacations.com) for a fly-drive trip priced from $529 for fall travel. You must book by October 15 in order to take advantage of this bargain, though.
The package includes round-trip airfare in economy class on Virgin Atlantic, seven-day car rental from Hertz (including local taxes) with unlimited mileage, and fuel surcharges. Airport taxes and fees are not included, however. The airline flies nonstop from New York-JFK, Newark, Chicago, Boston, Washington-Dulles, Orlando, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.
The lowest advertised price reflects travel November 1 through December 20, and January 1 through March 28, 2010. If you'd rather depart earlier in fall, travel now through October 31 starts from $619, as does travel through the Christmas-New Year holiday season, December 21-31. It's easy to explore the English countryside by car -- get out of London and see Stonehenge, Bath, or visit Stratford-on-Avon, for example. Find a place to stay by checking out what Bed and Breakfast Nationwide (tel. 012/5583-1235; www.bedandbreakfastnationwide.com) has to offer across England (and the rest of the United Kingdom and Ireland, for that matter); properties range from cottages to castles.
