JetBlue's New York and Boston Sale
Remember when it used to cost over $200 round-trip to fly between New York and Boston, one of the most expensive routes in commercial aviation? That may be history now that JetBlue (tel. 800/538-2583; www.jetblue.com) has announced daily nonstop service between the Hub and the Big Apple, beginning November 8 using large regional jets. Fares are just $25 each way between JFK and Logan. American seems to be matching between Boston and both LaGuardia and JFK. A 7-day advance purchase is required and fares must be booked by October 20 with all travel completed by Dec 14, 2005. Blackout dates are Nov 22, 2005 to Nov 28, 2005.
Secret Sale to Brazil
As we write, American (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com) and Delta (tel. 800/221-1212; www.delta.com) are in a death match fare war from each other's hubs to Rio and Sao Paulo, Brazil. There is no telling how long this sale will last but it's been going on for several days. Here's the deal: Cincinnati, Atlanta and Salt Lake City (Delta's hubs) to these Brazilian destinations on American for $432 round-trip, complete travel buy December 9; $425 round-trip from Dallas and Chicago (American's hubs) on Delta, also through December 9. These fares are generally about half what other airlines are charging at the moment. Quoted fares are before taxes, which will add about $100 round-trip. Travel is officially valid any day of the week, but some dates are already sold out so your best chance in finding these fares is by using a flexible date search on Travelocity.
Business Class from NYC to London for $1,700
MAXjet (tel. 888/435-9629; www.maxjet.net), a brand new airline offering only business class seats for travel between New York JFK and London Stansted Airport, is having a promotion allowing you to fly between these two cities for $1,558 round-trip, or a total of $1,692.10 after tax. And this fare is available for travel over Christmas. We tried a departure on December 21, returning on December 28. The lowest fare we found on the same dates was on Continental (to London Gatwick) for $2314, which is itself a steal compared to what fares normally are. This fare is an ongoing promotion, but we wouldn't wait too long to book since it is based on availability.
Sale to Germany from NYC
LTU (tel. 866/266-5588; www.ltu.de) is having a sale for travel from New York JFK to Düsseldorf and Frankfurt starting from $269 round-trip. To Düsseldorf, the next lowest fare is on Lufthansa for $289 round-trip; and the next lowest to Frankfurt is $276 round-trip on Icelandair (these are all base fares, before taxes, surcharges, etc). A round-trip total between New York JFK and Düsseldorf is $420.81 for travel departing November 21 and returning on November 28. The lowest fare for the same travel dates is on Air France, for an after-tax total of $510. This special is for travel on select dates between November 1 and December 15 only.
Fall and Winter Sale for Canadian Cities
American Airlines (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com) is having a small sale to Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver from select cities: Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York City. While the sale is not mind blowing, some of the fares are certainly the lowest available at the moment. New York JFK to Halifax is $309 round-trip after taxes, versus $367 on Canadian discounter Canjet Airlines. However, the sale offers Boston to Toronto for $290 round-trip, but US Airways is offering a $240 fare with more flexibility and longer travel dates. Same goes for Dallas to Vancouver, where the AA sale fare is $391 round-trip but Northwest is offering a $369 round-trip fare on the same dates we checked. There is still availability, and if you have some flexibility with your travel dates, then you shouldn't have trouble finding the sale fare. A 14- or 21-day advance purchase is required, for travel through December 31, and blackouts on November 22, 23, 27 and 28.
Fall Fares to Hawaii
American Airlines (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com) is offering a sale to Honolulu, Kauai, Kona, and Maui from various cities in the U.S. for travel through December. The fares are a mixed bag: the fares to Kauai, Kona and Maui are currently the lowest available (although some airlines are matching), whereas you might find some lower fares to Honolulu. For example: from Chicago to Kauai, the sale price is $561 round-trip (with United offering the same fare), versus $588 round-trip on other airlines; from Los Angeles to Kona, the sale is $321 round-trip (also offered by United) versus $359 round-trip on other carriers; and from Dallas to Maui the AA sale fare is $535 round-trip (also offered by Northwest) versus $573 round-trip. The sale from Chicago to Honolulu is $503 round-trip, but Northwest is offering a fare of $448 round-trip for the same dates. However, this sale also offers deals from smaller cities, so if you happen to live in one of them then you're in luck since the sale fares are really good. From Austin to Kauai you'll pay $460 round-trip; the next lowest fare is $538 round-trip on United. There's still availability, but you should be somewhat flexible with your dates. Travel Monday through Thursday only. Depart through December 12, with all travel completed by December 15, and blackouts on November 18, 19, 27 and 28. 3-night minimum stay and 60-day maximum stay.
Sale to Honolulu from West Coast
Hawaiian Airlines (tel. 800/367-5320; www.hawaiianair.com) is having another sale between Hawaii and Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Sacramento and Seattle, starting from $308 round-trip. These fares aren't the lowest available for all travel dates, but the sale allows travel through the end of January, which makes it better than what else is out there. For example, from San Diego to Honolulu the sale fare is $308 round-trip, with the lowest fare listed on Travelocity and Orbitz at $298 round-trip via Northwest and United; but that's only for travel through December 15, whereas the Hawaiian sale is also good for travel from January 8 through 31. For travel through January 31, the lowest price for San Diego/Honolulu is $378 on American. So far, we haven't had any problems finding seats in January, but don't wait too long. Travel to Honolulu December 1 to 13 and December 26 to January 31; and travel from Honolulu December 1 to 25 and January 8 to 31. You'll have better luck finding the fares for travel during the week rather than on weekends.
