Just as airlines are happy to sell you a one-way ticket, car rental companies are also taking advantage of the fact that sometimes people only need to rent one-way to get from A to B. A one-way rental can be the perfect trade off for travelers who don't love flying that much, or for those relocating to a new state, or maybe it's about time you took all that stuff you've been storing out of your parents' garage and move it to your city apartment. As things start to heat up in the southern states in locations like Florida and Arizona, several car companies need to move their excess fleet to cooler northern and western destinations so they are offering discounts, incentives and upgrades to renters who are looking to do the same.

Budget (tel. 800/283-4387; www.budget.com) is currently offering one-way minivan rentals at the sub-compact rental rate of $17.95 per day or an intermediate SUV for $24.95 per day when picking up from select locations in Florida or Arizona. If you don't need a big vehicle, a compact is $18.95 per day, an intermediate is $19.95 per day and a full-size is $21.95 per day; unlimited mileage is part of the package. Airport pickup locations include Daytona Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Melbourne, Miami, Orlando, Pensacola, St. Petersburg/Clearwater, Sarasota, Tampa, West Palm Beach and Tallahassee. Cars must be turned in to specific locations in the continental United States. Budget is also offering similar one-way rates from both airport and off-airport locations in Arizona to select locations in California. Sub-compact vehicles are $17.95, compact vehicles $18.95, intermediate vehicles $19.95 or full-size vehicles are $21.95 per day. This offer is valid until June 30, 2006 but there is limited availability so mention the Budget Customer Discount (BCD) Number U030191 when making your reservation.

Avis (tel. 800/331-1212; www.avis.com) matches Budget dollar for dollar on its one-way rentals from Florida to any U.S. location except California, Las Vegas and Reno.
