One of the more surprising discoveries is that a growing number of hotels, inns, resorts and spas themselves are trying to cater to dads with pampering packages of massages, strawberries and champagne, proving that a mani-pedi afternoon perhaps is not just for Mother's Day anymore. Even though he is the original metrosexual -- my father was wearing pink shirts and French cuffs when I was in diapers -- I'm not so sure he'd be down with a spa package, but then again, the man is full of surprises. In any case, we've found some specials designed for dad's favorite activities, whether it's wine tasting, baseball, golf, grilling, gambling, or a getaway with mom.
Bedell Cellars (tel. 631/734-7537; www.bedellcellars.com) an award-winning winery on the North Fork of Long Island, New York, has a package for Father's Day that includes a stay at either By the Bluff Bed and Breakfast or Harborfront Inn, a private tour and tasting at the winery, a there-course dinner at Scrimshaw restaurant, which is located on the water in Greenport, and golf at Island's End golf course. The winery is owned by Michael Lynne, who is the co-chairman and co-CEO of New Line Cinema, and artwork from Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman and Sam Taylor-Wood is displayed in the tasting room. Yearly, the winery produces about 10,000 cases, making the experience exclusive and limited. The limousine transfer to the winery from your inn doesn't hurt, either. The package costs $1,750 per couple and you must book by May 31.
