European Destinations (tel. 877/267-2247; has Albufeira, six days of car rental, daily breakfast (if the hotel offers it), hotel taxes and, most importantly, round-trip international airfare. The latter is calculated based on midweek departures; air taxes are not included.

Why Albufeira? It's an old fishing village with narrow streets located in the Algarve, the southernmost tip of the country, with old castles, Moorish heritage, and stark white buildings. Frommer's Portugal calls it "the St. Tropez of the Algarve." The water is warm and the beaches are welcoming, and fresh seafood is abundant. With a car at your disposal, you can reach Portimao in about a half an hour, and Faro or Lagos in about 45 minutes.

European Destinations provides a dynamic price history for all of their packages, which is great -- you can see the variations in price based on when you're traveling, your airport of choice and what sort of accommodations are available. It also lists the base price, without taxes, so a trip reserved in the past two weeks from Denver for seven nights starts at $671 but with taxes $1,028; Newark, for seven nights, starts at $985 but winds up at $1,257 with taxes. If you want to customize it -- the base package includes just five nights -- you can; the itineraries posted are loose suggestions, easily modified. Not interested in the Algarve but want a trip that includes bigger cities such as Lisbon or even hopscotch to Spain while you're over there? There are other trips to choose from on ED's Portugal page.
