This week's Smart Deal comes from Delta Vacations (tel. 800/800-1504; www.deltavacations.com), which transports you to the white sandy beaches of Cancun in January for three nights with airfare.
The Cancun deal's starting price of $425 caught our attention, considering it represents high season in Mexico. The hotel included in this package is Krystal Cancun, a four-star property that was recently refurbished and is on a beachfront location at the tip of Punta Cancun, about 10 minutes from downtown. The panorama afforded by the pool area means you can see the Caribbean from your lounge chair. Although this particular package offers what's called the European plan (meals are generally à la carte), you can opt for the all-inclusive plan at the resort, for an additional fee: it would cover all of your meals, drinks and activities. Tip: Staying with the European plan saves you money, and you'd have the flexibility to decide where you want to eat beyond the resort's three restaurants.
This deal is customizable, within the realm of Delta's nonstop flight path to Cancun of course, but what distinguishes this offer is the fairly wide range of departure cities and the ability to select among more than 40 resorts. Some of the promotions at the resorts include free nights, free meals, spa credits, and more. Furthermore, if you're a Delta frequent-flier member, you can earn up to 2,000 bonus miles.
Trip Type: Air-inclusive; independent:
What the Quoted Price Gets you: Flights from Boston to Cancun, three nights at Krystal Cancun Hotel, round-trip transfers between the airport and the hotel, airline fuel surcharges, and hotel taxes.
What Else You'll Have to Pay: Government taxes and fees of $113; add $106 per person if you decide to take advantage of the all-inclusive aspect of the hotel (which includes all meals and drinks)
When: The $425 starting price represents Monday departures Jan. 10, 17, 24; the promotion is valid for travel through Feb. 15, 2011 at higher prices.
