While the entire professional ski world turns their eyes to Turin in February to watch the Olympic downhill, slalom, freestyle and cross-country ski events, there's no excuse for not strapping yourself into your ski boots to make some good runs for yourself. And with all those professional skiers in Europe, that leaves the Black Double Diamond trails all to yourself. From the New York area to Colorado, ski areas and mountains are welcoming skiers with ski and stay deals and other winter specials.

Interlaken Inn (tel. 800/222-2909; www.interlakeninn.com) in Connecticut's Berkshires has some "Break Away Anytime" specials for downhill, cross country and snowshoeing. Built sometime around 1889, the Inn is old New England in ambiance and d¿cor with Tudor-style and Victorian-era accommodations and a main building with meeting rooms and a large dining area. Specializing in recreation, particularly skiing, the Interlaken has weekday or weekend travel specials until March 31, 2006. If you like snowshoeing, the hotel has a Great Outdoors Snowshoeing Package that includes one-night accommodations, a hearty full breakfast, snow shoe rentals, a container of hot cocoa for those cold trails, a box lunch, and a three course dinner at Morgan's, the hotel's restaurant. Maps are provided. All you have to do is dress warm. Prices start at $149 per person with double occupancy. If you want to takes the kids along, add $59 per child with an additional connecting room in the main lodge available fro $99. If you don't want to go at the trails alone, a four-hour guided tour of the environs is available for $50 per person. If you feel like it, substitute cross-country skiing for the snow shoeing with this package.

A stay and ski package available through the Interlaken with skiing at the Butternut Basin in nearby Great Barrington starts at only $90 per person. This package is good for two night's double occupancy accommodations at the Interlaken with two-days of lift tickets per person with lodging well from Sunday through Thursday and skiing good from Monday through Friday. The only black out days are from February 18 to February 26, 2006 due to President's Day and the school vacations.

In New York State, Whiteface Mountain (tel. 800/447-5224; www.whitefacelakeplacid.com) in Lake Placid is where the Olympians skied in the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games. Boasting the steepest vertical east of the Rockies, Whiteface has 74 trails including downhill trails for serious skiers and "sheltered" trails for families in the learning and teaching phase. For deals to the area, meaning the mountains and the quaint Olympic Village that is Lake Placid, try the "Ski and Stay" specials at www.lakeplacid.com (click the "Great Deals" flash animation in the middle of the page). To Whiteface Mountain, we found a midweek $72 per day per person special with one full day of lift tickets and a full breakfast with accommodations at the Hilton Lake Placid Resort. This package is good through March 29, 2006. There are plenty of specials on this page, including a two-night two-day special with lift tickets to Whiteface and lodging at the Northwoods Inn of Lake Placid. This special is good through April 15, 2006 with Sunday through Wednesday arrivals, so get ready for some spring skiing.

With partnerships and specials all over the country (and the world), Ski.com (tel. 800/778-8589; www.ski.com) serves up a smorgasbord of offers. The site ¿ the Internet's most comprehensive and impressive spot for all things "ski" -- lists ski reports, weather, lodge information, details on mountain trails and more. Available through February 15, 2006, a "Powder Blowout" special to Steamboat Springs, Colorado good for four-nights' accommodations with a three-day lift ticket costs approximately $547 per person. An airport shuttle to your lodge will also be provided. Quad rooms are also available. The lodge is only a short walk to the Steamboat gondola and has four outdoor hot tubs and an outdoor swimming pool. There is also a bus taking skiers to and from the town of Steamboat Springs. Complimentary high-speed Internet access is available through the lodge.

If you're considering Winter Park, Colorado, Ski.com is selling a five-night package that includes a four-day lift ticket with round-trip airport transfers to and from the Denver Airport starting at $941 per person based-on double occupancy. Accommodations are at the Zephyr Mountain Lodge, a huge condominium resort located at the base of Winter Park. Only 100 feet from the Zephyr Park ski lift, the lodge has fully equipped kitchens in each apartment, a children's center, hot tubs, a fitness center, high speed Internet access, and daily housekeeping among other amenities. Prices are subject to increase based on mid-week or weekend travel.

Other Winter Park packages can be had through www.skiwinterpark.com (tel. 800/979-0332). A mid-season special available from January through the end of February starts at $99 per person per night for two-night accommodations and two-days of lift tickets. Rates will vary based on time of travel and type of accommodations selected. A "Winter White Sale" starts at $308 for three-nights lodging and three-days of lift tickets is good through February 9, 2006. In all, there are six packages to choose from the Winter Park site.
