About our rating systemAn 1887 synagogue, the oldest house of worship in the city for Eastern European Jews, the Eldridge Street Project has the kind of grandeur that one normally associates with the cathedrals of Europe. There’s a poignancy to the place as well, as the building was abandoned for 40 years before restoration began in the 1990s, and it’s crumbling picturesquely away in places. An hourly “From Bottom to Top” tour covers the history of the synagogue and the issues involved in its restoration.
