You don’t have to be Jewish to say at New York’s first Kosher hotel, just a lover of history, as the owners here take the heritage of the Lower East Side seriously. Rooms are named after the famous men and women who came from the ‘hood (Fanny Brice, Milton Berle), and a mezuzah graces every guest-room door (that’s the Jewish talisman that’s nailed to the doorframe of Jewish homes; it contains the opening words of the Old Testament). Best of all, if you get one of the (often) apartment-sized rooms, they are filled with furniture that looks like a cousin of what would have been in use a century ago (the beds are more comfortable now, though many have old-fashioned wrought-iron frames). In addition to regular rooms, the hotel has hostel rooms. The service here could be improved, but for this coveted neighborhood, the prices are good.
