"Hello There" reads the carpet in the elevators, an obvious sign—not needed—that this is one of the friendliest hotels in the city. Guests can already tell, thanks to the free, nightly happy hour in the living room–like lobby; the offers of multiple loaners to guests (laptops, iPads, and bikes); and the gracious service. Rooms, too, have a happy air to them, with bright splashes of color on a blanket or chair, which contrasts nicely with the shabby-chic concrete ceilings (this was once a parking garage). Some rooms even have that rare-for-NYC amenity: a balcony. For really great views—at slightly more expense—ask for a "cityscape" rather than a "neighborhood" room.
