You can’t leave town without stopping into this San Antonio institution, if only for a hearty bowl of split-pea soup or a slice of the signature cherry cheesecake. This old-fashioned German deli started as a saloon in Beeville, Texas, in the early 1900s, moved to San Antonio in 1914, and settled at its current location in a former mercantile building in 1942. Career waitresses who look like they were born to sling strudels in a biergarten patrol the large open room with high-partitioned wooden booths and hexagon-patterned tile floors. This is a great refueling station near Alamo Plaza for the entire family, with a large kid-friendly selection and retro low prices. For less than $10, an overstuffed Reuben or a kielbasa plate should keep you going for most of the day.
