Spirit Adds Boston

Spirit Airlines (tel. 800/772-7117; www.spiritair.com) is launching new service from Boston starting August 15, with daily nonstop flights to Detroit and Myrtle Beach and connecting service from Detroit to Las Vegas and Los Angeles. While we were checking out their new fares ($198 RT to Detroit and $178 RT to Myrtle Beach) we made some interesting discoveries. First, it seems that Spirit's fares are no longer listed in Travelocity's flexible date searches. Second, we tried searching Boston to Myrtle Beach departing on September 20 and returning a week later. Orbitz gave us a total for of $256 RT on Spirit. On Spirit's site, however, the fare for those same dates and flights was $198.60 RT. On Expedia, Spirit's fares didn't show up at all. Kayak.com also failed to mention Spirit. So we strongly suggest (yes, we know it's extra work) that if you're flying on a route served by Spirit that you check their own site or go to www.sidestep.com, which returned the same low fare found on Spirit's own site.

Aloha Specials to Hawaii

Aloha Airlines (tel. 800/367-5250; www.alohaair.com) is offering special fares to Hawaii from various departure cities in California. Seats are very hard to find. Here are some sample fares including taxes and fees:

  • Orange County to Kona: $431 vs. next lowest $772 on United
  • San Diego to Maui: $371 on Aloha vs. $442 on Hawaiian

Sale to Cancun

United Airlines (tel. 800/864-8331; www.united.com) has announced a sale to Cancun.

  • Denver to Cancun: $420 vs. $386 on Delta via www.orbitz.com
