Frommers.com Airfare Deals and News for the Week of April 17, 2009

There's a fare war for flights to Hawaii, domestic U.S. bargains from Southwest, a list of airline regulations we need, and more deals and news in this week's roundup.

Belize City Sale Revisited

Remember that great American Airlines (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com) sale to Belize from last fall? We certainly do. Not only did we score a round-trip ticket from New York for just $160 (including taxes!), we also learned to avoid direct contact with sad patchy beach dogs, no matter how sweet-faced and innocent they appear (hello ringworm city, population: us). This latest crop of Belize City sale fares isn't as spectacular as the previous bunch, but still far better than the norm.

These fares are good for outbound travel on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays through July 27, with returns no later than July 30. Interested? Purchase your fare by April 21.

Southwest Summer Sale

Still deliberating over those summer vacay plans? The latest summer sale from Southwest (tel. 800/435-9792; www.southwest.com) may sway your decision. These fares require a 14-day advance purchase, and are valid for travel throughout the week, except Fridays and Sundays. All purchases must be made by April 20 for travel through August 13.

Midwest Airlines 20% Off Summer Sale

Also marching out the summer discounts is Midwest Airlines (tel. 800/452-2022; www.midwestairlines.com), with their 20% Off sale. The 21-day advance purchase is a slight downer, but early birds...worms...them's the breaks. All tickets must be purchased by April 20 for travel from May 5 through August 31. Fares include:

Honolulu Fare Wars

When brainstorming affordable vacation spots, does Hawaii spring to mind? Apparently not. Which is why it's such a great time to go. Fares are at bargain basement lows, and many without any advance purchase requirements and/or with a 330 window of travel! American and United are currently waging a price war in their hub cities, but the bargains definitely don't end there. Feast your peepers on these fares:

8 Airline Regulations We Need Now

Remember back a few weeks? We asked if you felt the airlines should be re-regulated? Ring any bells? Though we received many a colorful (read: passionate, expletive filled) email from both corners of the ring, 52% of you said thanks but no thanks to regulation. We're guessing it's the prospect of higher fares that persuaded you, and not so much the passenger rights bit, correct? Because while most folks might be willing to suffer a little to save some coin (ahem, knees-to-face coach seating) that doesn't necessarily mean they're okay with being stuck on the runway for 6 hours, or shelling out cash for a hotel because a flight was canceled. Certainly, there's a lack of passenger protection that needs to be addressed by the government. Take a look at our Top 8 Airline Regulations We Need Now. Think we missed one? Feel free to tack on your own.

Travel Insurance: Buy it from the Airlines, Online Travel Agent, or Neither?

If you've bought airfares from an airline or online travel site, you've probably been offered the option of adding travel insurance to your purchase. The prices seem reasonable, often as little as $12 per flight. But exactly what are you covered for, and why is this insurance so much cheaper than buying a policy from a third-party travel insurance stalwart such as Access America or Travel Guard? Find out.
