Smart Deal of the Week: Hawaii from $499 for 3 Nights and Airfare

By offering the same low price for stays on Oahu, Kauai, The Big Island, or Maui, Pleasant Holidays is making it tough to choose where to locate your Hawaiian escape.

This week's smart deal from Pleasant Holidays (tel. 800/742-9244; www.pleasantholidays.com) features Hawaii and includes round-trip airfare on United Airlines, three nights of accommodations, fuel surcharges, and all hotel taxes, from $499. The price is based on departures from west coast cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco for Sunday through Friday departures from July 2 through August 4. Although those are just sample dates for periods that are less expensive, the package itself is valid for travel through December 15.

One good aspect of this promotion is that the entry price is the same for Oahu, Kauai, The Big Island, and Maui. In Oahu, $499 reflects a high-rise hotel called Castle Maile Sky Court near Waikiki Beach, and an upgrade to the top-rated Royal Hawaiian, where kids 12 and younger eat and stay for free, is priced from $875. For Maui, the entry-level accommodations are the Kaanapali Ocean Inn, at the base of the West Maui Mountains; children 17 and under stay for free. You can upgrade to a property such as the AAA four-diamond rated Westin Maui Resort and Spa, priced from $809. The hotel has five swimming pools, a spa, and water activities, and is right on the beach. For those who want to fly to Kauai, the price point reflects the Sheraton Kauai Garden Hotel; kids stay and eat for free, too. To bump it up, the Grand Hyatt Resort and Spa is priced from $908. The hotel overlooks the Keoneloa Bay and each room has its own lanai.

For those who may be flying to Hawaii from across the Pacific, there's a facet of this promotion that offers a $50 discount on economy rental cars from Hertz and $100 discount for midsize cars and larger, provided guests are staying five nights.
