Business-Class Sale on SAS to Scandinavia
If you're shocked by fares to Europe this summer in those cramped economy-class seats, you might find this interesting: an economy-class round-trip fare from Newark to Stockholm on SAS (tel. 800/221-2350; www.flysas.com) leaving on July 8 and returning on July 15 will currently set you back $1,651 with taxes, but thanks to a sale on SAS, that same flight will cost $2,095 in business class. OK, both fares are high, but if we're being taken to the cleaners, at least we'd prefer going in comfort for not a heckuva lot more.
SAS's sale is for restricted (as in non-refundable) business class and it ends on May 31.
Thanks to corporations limiting their employees from flying in business class, other airlines are also offering "relatively" cheap business-class fares to Europe this summer. In some cases, you must book up to 50 days in advance and there are other restrictions, such as with this Delta sale from Atlanta or New York and this one on Qantas.
For fares, visit our city pages for Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen, and Helsinki.

Protections against "Flight Irregularity?"
Let's say your flight is canceled due to mechanical problems. Is your airline obligated to book you on another carrier at no charge? What protections do you have against flight irregularity?
Here's a recent e-mail on this very subject: "I haven't flown for several years, preferring to drive instead. One reason is that last time I flew, my flight was canceled due to mechanical problems. However, the airline (American) did put me on another airline at no extra charge to get me to my destination, and although we were still several hours late, it was better than sleeping on the airport floor. I need to fly to a wedding in August and wonder if United still has this policy in the event of a cancellation. What about other airlines?" Find out on Airfarewatchdog.
