Once again, many New York City hotels have banded together and chosen a low-season week during which to knock rates down to approachable levels. The next "Hotel Week NYC" as they call it (probably a riff on the Restaurant Weeks that are so popular at cities around the country) will fall January 3 to 12—fortunately, a week during airfare should also be at a low ebb.
Thirty hotels are participating, but some of the most newsworthy are the new entrants that enable you to experience the cutting edge of hotel style at a much reduced rate: The Ace, which is the keystone of one of the hippest boutique chains in the country and is near both the Empire State Building and the Flatiron Building, will be hacking its rate to $200. Just a week later, the normal price of over $300 a night resumes.
The Mexican-owned relative newcomer Hotel Americano, which is so art directed and modern that it looks more like a showroom for designers than a hotel, sit amid the galleries of West Chelsea, and it, too, is dealing at $200 rather than the usual $300. Even the cool Jade Hotel, barely open a year in a terrific part of Greenwich Village, is drumming up business for $200
Those hotels are both social magnets of their own, with buzzy lobbies or rooftop bars, and a stay puts you amid a whirl of international cosmopolitans, and it's fun to experience a stay like that in one of the most exciting cities in the world.
But if you'd rather see how low you can go by choosing a simpler hotel, you can get a rate as low as $100 at properties such as the Comfort Inn Times Square South, just three blocks south of the most frenetic block of 42nd Street, or at three of the GEM's properties, including the one in the appealing residential section of Chelsea, which is between the famed Greenwich Village and Times Square districts. The Affinia, not too far from Macy's, is also bargaining at just $100.
Those are just eight choices; there are 22 more (which all share common representation with an office that coordinates the effort), and each of them requires you to book directly in order to obtain the promotional Hotel Week deal. Don't forget that there will still be about 15% in taxes to pay.
