Southwest Airlines' 50th Birthday Sale Is Big—and Won't Last Long

For Southwest Airlines, it's been a week of good news and bad news so far.

On Monday, technical issues led to the grounding of flights nationwide. Then, a separate computer network problem on the very next day resulted in the cancellation of 500 flights and delays for thousands more.

While the company works through those headaches, Southwest customers have the chance to grab a nice gift for the airline's 50th birthday.

For an extremely limited time, base fares on every route the carrier flies are being cut in half for fall travel. The 50% discount applies to domestic as well as international flights to Mexico and the Caribbean. (Let's hope Southwest's technical glitches are fixed soon so that the flights can actually take off.)

To get the reduced rate, you need to move fast: The sale lasts only until the end of the day on Thursday, June 17—i.e., tomorrow.

Note that only a portion of the seats on each flight are getting the 50%-off treatment. That being said, I did find several discounted seats when I checked flights between California and Hawaii for as little as $300 round-trip, and cross-country flights from New York to L.A. for just $167 round-trip.

The sale is for travel between September 15 and November 3. To find discounted fares, use this link and enter the promo code SAVE50.

Ready, set, buy!
