Unrest Makes Puerto Vallarta a No-Go

Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, and Celebrity have all cancelled port visits to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, following a wave of crime in the tourist city and the surrounding Jalisco state.

Gunmen associated with a major drug cartel have been setting fire to vehicles, banks, and gasoline stations in response to crackdowns on them.

Cruise lines are replacing their Puerto Vallarta visits with days spent at sea so that their itineraries are not otherwise disrupted.

On May 5, the U.S. State Department affirmed its travel warning about the area, writing "U.S. citizens have been the victims of violent crimes, such as kidnapping, carjacking, and robbery by organized criminal groups" throughout the country of Mexico. Although the State Department did not warn against Puerto Vallarta specifically, it has been advising citizens to suspend travel to other parts of Jalisco.
