The U.S. State Department has issued a travel alert for Europe, following recent terror attacks in France, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Russia.

The alert, which went into effect May 1 and expires September 1, warns U.S. citizens that "extremists continue to focus on tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities as viable targets."

A State Department travel alert isn't as severe or as long-lasting as a travel warning, but shouldn't be taken lightly if you're planning a European vacation this summer. For U.S. citizens traveling in Europe, the government recommends the following:

* Check the website of the U.S. embassy in your destination city for recent security messages.

* Follow the instructions of local authorities, monitor media and local information sources, and factor updated information into your travel plans.

* Be prepared for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions.

* Stay in touch with your family members back home and make sure they know how to reach you in case of an emergency.

* Have an emergency plan of action ready.

* And register in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive email alerts with safety and security information during your trip. All you have to do is enter trip details like your passport number, flight info, and destination. It only takes a few minutes.
