Sweet Song: Discount Flyer to Add More Citizens to the iPod Nation

July 27, 2004 -- Newsweek recently declared us an iPod nation, as these portable music players grow more ubiquitous. For those behind the curve, an iPod is an MP3 player (a portable digital music device) that can hold upwards of 10,000 songs, depending on the model. From bike messengers to bond traders, it seems that almost everyone has one of these miniature marvels that allows you to move along with your own personal soundtrack. Duke University recently announced that all its incoming freshmen would receive an iPod upon their entrance to the university (for concerned parents, there is some academic software packaged into these players).

But you don't have to be a student to get your iPod for free. Song, Delta Airlines' low-fare subsidiary, has a promotion that's sure to be music to your ears. Customers who purchase roundtrip tickets on www.flysong.com between August 1 and August 12, 2004 for travel September 7 through October 6, 2004, qualify for one of three gifts as part of their "50 Years of Rock 'n Roll" celebration. Here's the breakdown:

  • For customers who book one roundtrip ticket: 100 song downloads from the iTunes Music Store (www.itunes.com)

  • For customers who book two roundtrip tickets on the same flight/itinerary: One Epiphone Les Paul Guitar from Gibson
  • For customers who book three roundtrip tickets on the same flight/itinerary: One Apple iPod mini (it holds around 1,000 songs)

Please note those restrictions again: you can qualify only with tickets booked via Flysong.com between August 1-12; for the guitar, two people must fly together; for the iPod, three people must fly together (which means you better fly with someone who's willing to share).

Song services the Northeast United States (Boston, New York, Hartford and Newark); many Florida vacation spots, as well as Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Juan. Like JetBlue, Song also provides personal video monitors with a wide range of entertainment options (though for a fee). For more info, call 800/FLY-SONG (359-7664) or click on www.flysong.com. Remember, you have to book online to qualify for this promotion!

Is this promotion preaching to the choir or is it the song of the siren? Give us your opinion on our Air Travel Message Boards.
