The Phoenix-based discount carrier, America West, is trimming ticket costs with a special sale aimed at the holiday traveler with a setup similar to the holiday sales started by USAir and Northwest we told you about earlier (click here to see that article). If you're willing to fly on the actual Christmas and New Year's holidays, you'll get the cheapest seats.
Fares are grouped into three different categories determined by travel dates: The cheapest, Category A, includes December 18-25 and January 1-6; slightly more expensive Category B includes December 22-24 and 31 and January 2-3; and Category C includes December 19, 26-30 and January 4-5. Tickets can be purchased now through December 26, and (we like this part) there is no advanced purchase requirement.
Sample one-way fares, in ascending category order A, B, C, include:
- Atlanta to Portland, OR: $147, $176, $235
- Boston to Albuquerque: $140, $168, $224
- Hartford to Ontario, CA: $149, $179, $238
- Minneapolis to Phoenix: $120, $133, $178
- Phoenix to Calgary: $111, $133, $178
- San Diego to Toronto: $142, $170, $226
- San Francisco to Raleigh/Durham: $149, $179, $238
