Parallel Destinies: Take a Ride Alongside the Biggest Event on Two Wheels in France

December 22, 2003 -- Lance Armstrong will be trying for an unprecedented sixth win in the 2004 Tour de France. You can tour along the very same routes during the event, on one of several packages just announced by Discover France. There are many mix-and-match itineraries to choose from, and you can go it on your own or enjoy the support of an escorted tour over the three-week period in July.

In addition to providing travelers with expert guides and support staff, this year a limited number of self-guided tours will be available, taking in key stages in the Pyrenees and Alps. One example takes place during the third week (July 17-24) of the of the three-week race, and it's recommended for strong cyclists. Costing only €1,055 ($1,308), this trip includes transfers to and from the arrival city, seven nights' lodging, daily breakfasts, three dinners, emergency assistance, sports drinks, energy bars and more. You will be based at Les Deux Alpes, just up the road from Alpe d'Huez. You can spend the week riding the big mountain roads here and see the Tour de France as it comes through for its important stages.

All guided tours include lodging, all meals, entrance fees, group transportation from morning to night, and guide and mechanic services as well as transfers to and from the rendezvous points (the airport in Paris to nearest major train station, for instance). While clients are expected to bring their own bicycles, there is a limited supply of Eddy Merckx Gara model racing bikes for rent. Group size will be from 20 to 24 persons.

This is event is wildly popular and millions come along for a countrywide, roadside party. Considering the scale of the Tour de France, it's no surprise that these tours sell out rather quickly. If you can't get on the tour you want, don't fret; Discover France has been adding additional trips as demand dictates.
