Orlando Picks Itself Up, Dusts Off & Goes on Sale

October 8, 2004 -- Four hurricanes in so many weeks pummeled large parts of the Caribbean and Florida. While Orlando was smacked about and thoroughly drenched, USA Today reports that -- except for two downtown hotels -- the town was left relatively unscathed. In the spirit of its recovery, we take a look at a couple of current offers.

Delta Vacations (tel. 800/872-7786; http://deltavacations.lmdeals.com) is showing a series of last-minute packages on its site that include your airfare out your choice of 76 separate gateways, accommodations and car -- plus you'll earn frequent flier miles with Delta. Since these deals are for the let's-pick-up-and-go traveler, you must purchase between three hours to seven days before you want to take off.

By way of example, there are three-night packages out of New York City to Orlando starting from $230 per person based on two people traveling together. Prices include your airfare, hotel and all taxes and fees.

Southwest Vacations (tel. 800/243-8372; www.swavacations.com) has all sorts of deals on its website, too. One example is a $259 and up price from Albuquerque to Orlando, with two nights at the Comfort Inn Lake Buena Vista, a very nice hotel indeed. Departures dates from now through December 18, 2004, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

The outifit is also offering a "Stay 4, Play Free" at Universal Orlando Resorts, valid for travel through December 23. When you purchase a four-night stay or longer you get two unlimited admission passes to the Universal Studios, as well as ride access to both theme parks, free on-site transportion to and from the theme parks and Universal City, priority seating at selected restaurants, use of hotel room key car to charge purchases and delivery of this package to your hotel room. Prices vary per departure gateway.
