Scholarly Journeys: Learn the Language and more with a Study Abroad Program

For some years now, NRCSA has been offering students and anyone else interested in learning foreign languages the chance to go abroad to hit the books, parlez and sprechen with the natives, for suitably moderate prices. Each month, the NRCSA (National Registration Center for Study Abroad) issues an e-mail news briefing to keep its followers up to date.

In the latest issue available, Mary E. Dally-Muenzmaier, the editor, has a good quota of information on study, internships, teaching and volunteer work abroad. Here are some of her samples:

Become a fluent German speaker and an Austrian-qualified ski/snowboard instructor at the same time! All in Kitzbuhel, the chic-est of the chic Austrian Alpine resorts. For information, go to www.nrcsa.com/whats_new/articles/1000996.html.

Non traditional student help in Paris. Adult professionals who want comfortable surroundings, high class facilities, excellent academics and a setting filled with peers from around the world (for those who want the very best, she says), go to ELFE in Paris, a top-rated school for French immersion for adult students. There are internships available in numerous fields in fashionable and exciting Milan, where you can also earn academic credit or just improve your resume and marketability by doing an Italian-language program combined with an internship. Web site: www.nrcsa.com/nh_df/hsitaly/hsitalyprogram.html.

The famous Scuola Leonardo da Vinci schools, with locations in Florence, Sienna and Rome, now offer U.S. academic credit direct from the school for studies at any of the locations. Simple application and acceptance procedure, U.S. transcript provided upon completion of studies. Web site: www.nrcsa.com/nh_df/4546/4546index.html.

Much more information about NRCSA, including opportunities for families with children to study at select Spanish-language schools, worldwide, and "Language Plus," in which you learn the language through immersion and study the culture as well, can be found at the organization's Web site. They also say they are coming up with their 2003 dates and fees soon, and that anyone enrolling in selected schools before September 20, 2002 for the 2003 program will pay only the 2002 fee schedule. This could mean a substantial saving at many schools, they say.
