Planning a trip to Abergavenny
Visitor Information -- Abergavenny's Civic Society has laid out a Town Trail, marking buildings and other points of interest with brass plaques. For more info about the town and its environs, get in touch with the Tourist Information Centre, Swan Meadow, Monmouth Road (tel. 01873/857588; www.abergavenny.co.uk); it's open Easter to October daily 10am to 1pm and 2 to 5:30pm, and November to Easter daily 10am to 4pm.
Getting There
The town is linked by rail to both Shrewsbury and Hereford (in England) and to Newport, a distance of 31km (19 miles) to the southwest, in Wales. From Newport, rail connections are made to Cardiff, Bristol, and London. The Abergavenny Rail Station is on Station Road, off Monmouth Road. The no. X3 or X4 Stagecoach Bus from Hereford arrives 10 times per day. Bus no. X43 arrives seven times per day from Brecon, and bus no. If driving from Hereford, take the A465 southwest; from Cardiff, take the M4 motorway east toward London but cut north along the A4042 toward Abergavenny.
