Official policy still permits barter for admission (with prior notice), but theatergoers now pay with cash or plastic to attend the State Theater of Virginia, America's longest-running professional repertory theater. The building was constructed around 1832 as a Presbyterian church and later served as a meeting hall for the Sons of Temperance. It functioned as the town hall and opera house from 1876 until 1933, when Robert Porterfield brought his unemployed actors here. Recent productions, now performed by a professional company, have included Forever Plaid and Of Mice and Men. The theater's alumni include Patricia Neal, Ernest Borgnine, Gregory Peck, Ned Beatty, and Kevin Spacey. Across Main Street, the Barter's Stage II specializes in the classics. The season for both stages runs from February through December. The main stage is dark Monday.
