German Memorial

This massive edifice to the Germans who lost their lives in the North African campaign stands between the new coast road and the sea, 14km (8 1/2 miles) west of the turnoff to the Commonwealth Cemetery. It stands on the brow of a small hill, from which you can see just how bleak and difficult the territory is. Its octagonal structure and lack of moat or drawbridge are reminiscent of another German military monument, the 13th century Castel del Monte in southeastern Italy. Inside, some 4,500 German bodies are interred under black basalt.
