Alabama has the usual suspects across the state as far as chain hotels and motels go. New to the state, PCH Resorts just opened a Marriott Shoals Hotel & Spa in Florence (tel. 800/593-6450 or 256/246-3600; www.marriott.com) and a Renaissance Ross Bridge Golf Resort & Spa (tel. 800/593-6419 or 205/916-7677; www.rossbridgeresort.com) near Birmingham. Two more are in the works, one in Montgomery and another in Mobile. The Renaissance Ross Bridge is actually a renovation of the Battle Housel, a historic hotel built in 1852 that was a favorite of visiting politicos of the day like Woodrow Wilson and Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

If you like your accommodations with wheels, there are several RV parks in Alabama, as well as camping grounds. The Alabama Bed & Breakfast Association (www.bedandbreakfastalabama.com) is a great source to find the perfect inn, whether it's a historic stately mansion or a house on the beach that you seek. Particularly appealing is the grown-ups only Beach House, 9218 Dacus Lane (tel. 800/659-6004 or 251/540-7039; www.bigbeachhouse.com), perched on a Gulf Shores dune with rambling decks with panoramic views of the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
