The original attraction here consists of a series of trails through primary and secondary forests alongside La Paz River, with lookouts over a series of powerful falls, including the namesake La Paz Fall. In addition to the orchid garden and a hummingbird garden, you must visit the huge butterfly garden. A small serpentarium, featuring a mix of venomous and nonvenomous native snakes, several terrariums containing frogs and lizards, and a section of wildcats and local monkey species in large enclosures are added attractions. Although the admission fee is a little steep, everything is well done, especially the trails and waterfalls. That said, some find the whole operation a little artificial in feel. Yet it’s a good place to get a broad experience in one compact package, especially for families with young children. This is also a nice stop after a morning visit to the Poás Volcano. Plan to spend 3 to 4 hours here. The hotel rooms here at Peace Lodge are some of the nicest in the country.
