Musée Lapérouse
On the opposite bank of the Tarn from the bulk of Albi’s medieval core (take the Pont-Vieux), this museum tells the story of the Albigeois Jean-François de Lapérouse. Louis XVI was so impressed by the sea-faring captain that he sent him on a mission with two frigates and 225 sailors and scientists to map and chart the coastlines of Alaska, California, and China at a time of commercial rivalry with England over overseas colonies. In 1788 they reached the Salomon Islands, then vanished without trace. The museum tries to unravel the mystery.
