Getting Around

Alegría is a very walkable town; its tourism office, Internet cafe, restaurants, and hotels are all within a few blocks of its town square.

Fast Facts

Alegría has no banks, ATMs, or post office, but all of these can be found in nearby Santiago de María. A pharmacy is located 1 block from the square, across from the church. Internet access is available daily from 8am to 9pm for $1 an hour in a cafe just behind the main tourist kiosk; call tel. 503/2628-1159 for info. Alegría's tourist police can be reached at tel. 503/2628-1016 and ambulance service is at tel. 503/2611-1332.

Getting There

From San Miguel, catch any bus toward San Salvador and tell the driver to let you off in Triunfo ($1.50). There, you'll catch a minibus to the city of Santiago de María, where you can take one of a steady stream of buses the final 4km (2 1/2 miles) to Alegría. Buses also run daily all day between Alegría and nearby Santiago de María (35¢), where you can make connections to the rest of the country. From San Salvador, catch the bus, route 302, to the town of Usulutan ($1.50), where you then a catch bus, route 348, to Santiago de Maria (35¢).

When driving from San Salvador in the west or San Miguel in the east, follow CA-1, also known as Carretera Panamericana (the Pan-American Highway), and get off at the sign for Santiago de María. Follow the signs the remaining 4km (2 1/2 miles) to Alegría.
