Alexandria Black History Museum
In 1939, African Americans in Alexandria staged a sit-in to protest the segregation of blacks from Alexandria’s main library. The black community built its own public library, and it is this 1940s building that now serves as the Black History Museum. The center exhibits photographs, documents, and memorabilia relating to the black citizens of Alexandria from the 18th century forward. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum presents rotating exhibits, genealogy workshops, book signings, and other activities. A half-hour is enough time to spend at the center.
The museum is actually on the outskirts of Old Town. Once you’ve explored the museum, walk into Old Town, rather than taking the Metro or even a taxi. Have a staff person point you in the direction of Washington Street, east of the center; if you choose, turn right (south) at Washington Street and walk two blocks to the Lee-Fendall House at Oronoco and Washington streets.
