Getting There

Trains leave from London's Victoria Station. Two trains per hour make the 1 1/4-hour trip daily. For rail information, call tel. 0845/748-4950 or visit www.nationalrail.co.uk. Alfriston has no rail service.

Buses run daily to Lewes from London's Victoria Coach Station, though the 3-hour trip has so many stops that it's better to take the train. Call tel. 0871/781-81-81 for schedules or visit www.nationalexpress.com.

A bus runs from Lewes to Alfriston every 90 minutes. It's operated by Countryliner (bus no. 125; tel. 01444/506919; www.countryliner-coaches.co.uk). For bus information and schedules in the area, call tel. 0871/200-2233. The bus station at Lewes is on East Gate Street in the center of town.

If you're driving, head east along the M25 (the London Ring Rd.), and cut south on the A26 via East Grinstead to Lewes. Once at Lewes, follow the A27 east to the signposted turnoff for the village of Alfriston.
