Hotel Les Monges Palace
A rather charming hodgepodge of conjoined buildings with exposed brick and stone and extensive tilework, Les Monges has served as a lodging since 1989. The location near the city government offices places you smack in the middle of town; the room decor, while modest, is hardly as monkish as the name would suggest. One of the junior suites has Japanese-style furnishings, including a bed so low that you almost have to kneel first to lie down. There’s a suite for wheelchair users. It all has a whimsical charm, and the family that operates the “palace” has a real sense of hospitality—they’re genuinely excited to share their beloved Alicante with guests. The shared rooftop patio has charming views of the roofs and chimneys of old Alicante.
