Hotels in Alice Springs
Where to Stay in Alice Springs
Alice’s hotel stock is not grand. Many properties have dated rooms and modest facilities; they’re no match for the gleaming Ayers Rock Resort (described later in this chapter). You may pay lower rates than those listed in the summer off-season (Dec–Mar) and even as late as June. Peak season typically runs from July through October or November.
Several backpacker resorts offer dorm rooms and doubles. One of the best is Annie’s Place, 4 Traegar Ave., Alice Springs, NT 0870 ( tel. 1800/359 089 in Australia, or 08/8952 1545; www.mulgas.com.au/annies). Doubles cost between A$60 for a room with shared bathroom and A$75 for one with your own bathroom. Dorm rooms (single sex or mixed) sleep 4 to 6 and cost A$23 per person. Annie’s Place runs Mulga’s Adventures (www.mulgas.com.au), which operates a 3-day backpackers’tour of the area, including Uluru, for A$355.
If you’ve rented a camper van, the Stuart Tourist and Caravan Park, Larapinta Drive, Alice Springs ( tel. 1300/823 404 in Australia or 08/8952 2547; www.stuartcaravanpark.com.au), has powered sites costing A$35 a night. Cabins here cost between A$85 and A$175 per night, depending on the cabin and the season.

Lasseters
The Lasseter Resort and Casino has a surprising elegance for a collection of squat, motel-like two- and three-story buildings. But within these buildings, the rooms (especially those on the third floor), have marvelously high, peaked-ceilings, which give them an airy grace. Above the…$$Around Town
