Hotel Helios Costa Tropical
Opened in 1989, this large white hotel helped usher in tourism in Almuñécar. It remains our favorite lodging in town. Located right across the street from the Playa San Cristobal, it takes advantage of the setting with sea-view terraces on most of the fairly spacious guest rooms. The Helios has several resort features including a pool, game rooms for kids, meeting rooms, and even a hairdresser. But friendly and helpful staff provide the kind of personal attention we usually expect in smaller properties. Two especially nice features are the 10th-floor solarium and the heated pool, open November through March for winter getaways. Note that the hotel has a special relationship with competitive cyclists and offers bike racks, a workshop and washing area, and even special menus if you’re in training.
