"Perfect" is a strong word, but this wonderful resort may come close. The staff is superb. Some seem to have the supernatural ability to know what guests want moments before they themselves do. The grounds, which include a beach, two swimming pools, and a Jacuzzi are serene, pretty and well-maintained. And the rooms have the kind of contemporary styling you don’t find often in Belize, each with an abstract mural behind the coquettishly mosquito-net-draped beds (they’re quite romantic looking). In addition, rooms boast sculptures, ceramics, and paintings from around the world. Every lodging here is a private bungalow or villa, and all can be considered junior suites or better. My favorites are the seafront casitas, which are the closest to the ocean and feature a large sitting area, a king bed on a raised platform, and an interior garden shower. Onsite is a small spa, with a full list of treatments and cures, as well as a full-service tour desk. The hotel also has an excellent restaurant, Mambo. Matachica is one of the few "adults only" resorts in Belize (one of the others is their sister property Gaia. Guests must be 16 or older.
