In the 1980s, construction of this superbly equipped 1,600-seat auditorium sparked street riots that sent teargas drifting across what is now the stage. Today, it's the performances that cause a stir. The Muziektheater is one of the city's stellar venues and home base of the highly regarded Netherlands Opera and National Ballet. As at the Concertgebouw, there are free "musical lunches" from October to June -- these half-hour concerts are on Tuesdays at 12:30pm (doors open at 12:15pm).
