Wertheim Park
The little scrap of grass overlooking Nieuwe Herengracht canal houses one of Amsterdam’s most poignant commemorations of the Holocaust. In the center of Wertheim Park is a 1993 memorial by sculptor Jan Wolkers, dedicated to the millions killed at Auschwitz. Six large cracked glass shards lie flat on the ground reflecting a shattered sky and covering a buried urn that contains ashes of the dead from the concentration camp. The glass legend reads nooit meer auschwitz (“Never Again, Auschwitz”), with the words reflecting back from the glass.
