A little hotel that packs a big punch, the Clemens is a budget choice that has been extensively upgraded. As befits a two-star establishment, it's not long on amenities, but the refurbed rooms are all pristine and welcoming with wet rooms. Bear in mind when booking that the Clemens sits on one of the city's main thoroughfares, although the rooms at the front of the building do have the added pull of cute wrought-iron balconies to perch on. Typically for a small hotel in central Amsterdam, it occupies four floors in a narrow townhouse and there's simply no place to put an elevator, but the hotel is fantastically located near the Anne Frank Huis and the Westerkerk.
