Mauro Mansion

Currently riding high on the Amsterdam list of hot hotels, Mauro Mansion is the antithesis of a bland city chain hotel. This little gem is a nine-room treasure-trove of quirky design hidden in a 16th-century canal house overlooking Geldersekade, and is run by an equally offbeat couple. Several bedrooms have views over the canal and all are a stylish clash of old and new—hammocks, beds swathed in net, shiny rubber flooring, wardrobes made of industrial piping, and pristine white-tiled bathrooms. Children 11 and younger are not allowed and breakfast is optional, costing €5 per person and served between 8:30 and 11am, but such is its current popularity that you'll need to book well in advance. The only real drawback? There's no elevator.
