Hoppe is an ancient brown cafe that dates back to 1670. It has a convivial, English-pub atmosphere, and is standing-room-only in the early evening, when the place fills up with a merry after-work bunch of locals. Things can become a bit rowdy after a couple of samplings of Dutch jenever , a gin-like liqueur with recipes dating back to the 17th century, when it was a popular tipple (it was considered to have medicinal properties) of the sailors who manned the boats of the East India Company.
