A permanent fixture along the Singel, the Bloemenmarkt is partly housed on riverboats. The massive plant-and-flower bonanza has been in its present position since 1883 and runs from the Koningsplein shopping street along the canal to Muntplein. Always festooned in a blaze of color, the flower market really explodes into psychedelic overdrive in springtime when the tulip bulbs and hyacinths arrive. It also looks fetching around Christmas under a carpet of fake snow and sparkly baubles. Admire the swathes of cut flowers and plants, but restrict your buying to gardening tools, seeds, and bulbs ready packed and stamped for export if you expect to take them out of the country. Open Monday to Saturday 9am to 5:30pm, Sunday 11am to 5:30pm.
