Copper Whale Inn
The most romantic of the Anchorage splurges is the Copper Whale Inn where, from some of the rooms, you can gaze across Cook Inlet at the snow-capped peaks of the Aleutian range without even lifting your head from your overstuffed pillow. The inn is essentially a small, boutique hotel with rooms in two buildings (an old doctor’s home and a newer building that resembles the older one) separated by a water garden. Close to all the downtown attractions, the inn is just a block away from the coastal trail that runs along the Anchorage shoreline, convenient for long walks on bright summer nights. Each of the 14 rooms is shaped and decorated differently, but all have simple yet elegant furnishings and cushy beds. Some have fantastic views, a few open onto a patio with a goldfish pond, one has a fireplace. Most have private baths. None of them are terribly large, but the whole place is so well-kept and refined you don’t really care. A continental breakfast is served in the living room, which has a stone-lined fireplace and the same view of the Aleutian Mountains as the best rooms.
On site is a bicycle rental outlet, a handy operation as the biking in this area is spectacular.
