Castle Espie Wetland Centre
This marvelous wildlife center, named for a castle that has long since ceased to be, is home to a virtual United Nations of rare migratory geese, ducks, and swans. Some birds are so accustomed to visitors that they will eat grain from their hands, so kids can have the disarming experience of meeting Hooper swans eye to eye. Guided trails are designed for children and families, and the center sponsors activities and events year-round. Every summer, the “duckery” becomes home to dozens of adorable, newly-hatched goslings, ducklings, and cygnets. The book and gift shop is enticing, the kids’ play area is excellent, and the restaurant serves good lunches and home-baked cakes.
