Be sure to take local trains from city center to city center, not the TGV, which, in this case, takes more time. If driving, head south along D570N from Avignon.

Special Events — Arles’s world-beating photographic event, Les Recontres d’Arles (www.rencontres-arles.com; tel. 04-90-96-76-06), held from early July until late September, focuses on contemporary international images from nature to warzones. Some exhibitions are free, although passes for all key shows also available from 39€ when booked online. The ticket office is located in place de la République for the duration of the festival.
