Suwana's Thai Orchid
Named for chef and owner Suwana Cry, Thai Orchid serves unusually authentic (read: some of the dishes may make you sweat, they're so spicy) food, in a pleasant setting in Ashevilles downtown. Their most popular entree, Pad Khee Mao or "drunken noodles", is a tasty melange of broad noodles, fresh veggies, your choice of protein here made with a spicy whiskey sauce (hey, this is the south!) rather than the traditional rice wine sauce. The creamy, coconut-based Tom Kha soup is another stellar option, this time an appetizer (though a hearty one). Oddly, the menu also includes a few Chinese dishes. We'd advise you to skip those. The Thai food is much better here (for the obvious reason that the chef is of Thai heritage).
