The best of two worlds come together here in the countryside just outside the town walls—the basilica and other sights are a 20-minute walk away, while a pool, garden, and green surrounds provide a break from Assisi’s stony streets and squares. The nicest rooms are in a low-slung outbuilding facing lawns on one side and balcony views of the valley on the other, but those in a hotel section also open to gardens or balconies. Room decor is functionally comfortable, enlivened with colorful reproductions of Giotto’s basilica murals over the beds, no doubt instilling dreams of doing saintly deeds.
