If rooms at the inns in Assisi are full, settle into Spello in style at the palace of a 15th-century merchant, converted in the 18th and 19th centuries to its fairly splendid current state. The vaulted salons are suitably regal, filled with antiques and trompe l’oeil detailing, while guest rooms retain all the character you’d expect from such historic surroundings. Views from rooms in the rear are especially refreshing, overlooking a large garden and terrace to the valley below.
