The city of Astoria has worked hard to revitalize its historic Columbia River waterfront and to make it accessible to residents and visitors. There are several places in or near downtown where you can enjoy the views and watch the wildlife (seals, bald eagles, herons) and the passing parade of barges and enormous cargo ships. The Sixth Street Viewing Dock, a raised viewing platform, provides impressive views of the massive Astoria–Megler Bridge stretching for more than 4 miles across the mouth of the river from Oregon to Washington. On weekends and daily from June through August (noon–7pm), the restored 1913 Astoria Riverfront Trolley ([tel] 503/325-8790; fare $1) runs between Pier 39 and the Astoria Red Lion Inn, making several stops along its 4-mile route; the round trip takes about an hour. The 5-mile Astoria Riverwalk, a flat, paved trail between the Port of Astoria and 40th Street, is a perfect way to explore Astoria’s revitalized waterfront on foot or by bike.
